South Africa pushes for Grand Inga hydropower project go-ahead

first_img5 November 2014The Grand Inga Hydropower project may prove to be South Africa’s solution to the current and future energy challenges if the South African legislature ratifies the treaty on the energy scheme with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).The treaty, signed by South Africa and the DRC in October this year, provides the framework for the facilitation of power generation from the Grand Inga project and its delivery to the border between the DRC and Zambia. On Tuesday, 5 November, South African parliament’s portfolio committee on energy made a recommendation that the legislature make an official decision on the hydropower project to be built on the Inga dams along the Congo River. The multi- phase hydro power station has the potential to generate approximately 40 000MW, sufficient to power half of Africa.Inga 3The ratification of the treaty will pave the way for the development of Inga 3, which will provide 2 500 MW of electricity to South Africa and contribute to regional integration, energy security and economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner. Two existing dams, Inga 1 and 2, have been in operation since 1972 and 1982 respectively, together generating nearly 1 800 MW. The next phase of the Grand Inga project, Inga 3, is expected to cost in the region of US$12-billion and produce around 4 800 MW of electricity.Subsequent phases, adding up to an eventual total capacity of 40 000 MW, will allow countries in southern Africa, north-east Africa and parts of west Africa to benefit from production at the site. It is envisaged that a new transmission line from the DRC to South Africa will be constructed after Inga 3. The transmission line will most probably go through Zambia and Zimbabwe and Botswana.Security concernsBriefing the committee, South African ambassador to the DRC, Ntshikiwane Mashimbye, said the only concern at the moment is the security and financial situation in the DRC. However, in order for the committee to effectively deal with this, an oversight visit to the DRC will suffice. “This is a project that separates us as a generation that wants to change a continent to a different one,’ he said.Adding, Mashimbye said the project is not about generating electricity for the DRC and its neighbours, but about the industrialisation of Africa. “All conflicts will never come to an end until we have the requisite energy and industrialise the continent,’ said Mashimbye.Deputy Minister for Energy Thembisile Majola said South Africa is playing an active role to end the current political conflicts in the DRC. “We have lost lives in the DRC. We continue to be present to try and secure that country because we know that the day when the giant rises the continent will also rise,’ she said.Inga has potential to supply clean energySouth Africa’s cabinet approved the ratification of the treaty on the Grand Inga hydropower project between South Africa and the DRC on 22 August 2014. Announcing the decision on the day, Minister in the Presidency for Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, Jeff Radebe, said the Inga project has the potential to supply clean and affordable imported hydroelectric power to meet the needs of the DRC, South Africa and surrounding countries.“The project holds the potential to fast-track SADC development, alleviate energy poverty, stimulate economic growth and facilitate infrastructure development.“This represents one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken on the African continent, and one which will long be a resounding symbol of the rise of Africa and her people,” he said.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

NoSQL Graph Database Neo4j Community Edition Now Available Under GPL

first_imgNeo Technology, the sponsor company of the graph database Neo4j, has released the Community Edition of Neo4j under a GNU General Public License (GPL). Previously, it was available under the Affero General Public License. “That means that in every scenario where you can use MySQL for free, you can now also use Neo4j Community for free,” writes Neo Technology co-founder Emil Eifrem on his blog.According to Wikipedia, the Affero General Public License was “designed to close a perceived application service provider “loophole” (the “ASP loophole”) in the ordinary GPL, whereby using but not distributing the software, the copyleft provisions are not triggered.” What this should mean in practice is that companies will now be able to provide hosted services based on Neo4j without open-sourcing code modifications or paying for the commercial version of Neo4j (Disclaimer: This does not constitute legal advice. Please consult your legal counsel if you have questions regarding open source licenses.)Interest in graph databases in general, and Neo4j in particular, has been growing for the year. Eifrem writes “Some developers found the Neo4j license too restrictive, preventing their teams from using Neo4j.” Eifrem believes this new, less restrictive license will spur more growth in the graph database sector.“Since the graph data model is the richest of all the NOSQL data models, graph databases have the opportunity to be the most useful for most people in most situations, and ultimately grab the largest slice of the NOSQL market,” Eifrem writes. The players were saying well done, the manager (Jurgen Klopp) was saying well done because I’d scored my first Liverpool goal. “It was probably only when I started checking Instagram I realised the significance.”Obviously that game was when I got quite a lot of attention. I was definitely recognised going out in the streets, shopping in Liverpool One, people asking for a few pictures. You had to get used to people looking.”The club helped us and I got a lot of advice from family, friends and my agent, but you also have to take quite a bit of on your own shoulders and it’s a bit strange when it happens.”I look back now and think I handled it well. Coach That John Calipari Confronted About Cheating Allegations May Be Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin

(Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images) kentucky basketball jones calipari kidd-gilchrist teagueTwitter/@tneelOn Tuesday night, we shared a clip from Gary Parrish’s radio show, in which he told a story about John Calipari accosting a fellow coach over recruiting allegations. Kentucky Sports Radio has look further into things, and as it turns out, this story might not be a new one. KSR’s Drew Franklin found an old story from Parrish in 2010, that is largely the same as the one he told this week. The coach in question? Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin.Parrish noted that Calipari will let people know when he has problems with others and he liked the fact that he is up front. He told a story about a confrontation Calipari had with Cincinnati Coach Mick Cronin after he heard Cronin had told some associates that he didnt understand how he could go to every game for a kid and then Calipari could come in at the last minute and take him (presumably Marquis Teague). Calipari heard the comment, went to Cronin and basically said “you have to go see all the kid’s games…I can sit back and decide which kid I want and come and get them.”While we’re not totally sure that Cronin was the example given again, it does seem like this is the same story. It’d probably be hard for Calipari to get away with using the same rant too many times. This is probably not something Cincinnati basketball fans want to be reminded of too often, though.last_img read more

Commentary Resilient spirit needed for Ohio State football to advance to 90

Ohio State’s game against Purdue on Saturday appeared to be over. With the Buckeyes trailing by eight points, and just two minutes and 40 seconds remaining on the game clock, OSU redshirt junior backup quarterback Kenny Guiton’s deep ball had just been intercepted by Purdue sophomore safety Landon Feichter. As it seemed the 7-0 Buckeyes were headed for their first loss of the season, many OSU football fans began their exodus from Ohio Stadium. It was hard not to give up on the Buckeyes at that point. OSU’s star quarterback, sophomore Braxton Miller, had left the game in the third quarter with a head injury. In his place, Guiton had failed to lead the Buckeyes to points on three consecutive drives. For the Buckeyes’ offense to even get another shot at tying the game, a defense that had given up 49 points to Indiana one week earlier needed to force Purdue’s offense off the field in four downs or less. If the Buckeyes were going to win, they needed a miracle. At that point, the Buckeyes showed the resilient, never-say-die attitude that first-year coach Urban Meyer has clearly instilled. The defense did exactly what it needed to do, not allowing a single first down and forcing a punt, which gave Guiton and the offense 47 seconds for one final shot at a game-tying drive. Guiton took advantage of his moment to shine. Guiton’s first pass was a 39-yard connection with sophomore wide receiver Devin Smith, which kicked off a drive that reached completion with a two-yard touchdown pass to redshirt junior wide receiver Chris Fields. Still needing two points to send the game to overtime, Guiton subsequently completed a pass to wide-open sophomore tight end Jeff Heuerman in the end zone. From there, the Buckeyes did their job again on both sides of the ball, as another Guiton-led scoring drive and a defensive stop gave the Buckeyes an improbable 29-22 victory in overtime. The Buckeyes may be 8-0, but they certainly haven’t made it easy to stay undefeated. While they have been heavily favored in most games, they have trailed in the second quarter or later in seven of eight games, and have either gone to overtime or won by three points or less in three of their four in-conference games this season. As should be expected of any team with a postseason ban and a first-year head coach, the Buckeyes have their issues, but they have displayed a knack for coming through and making the plays necessary to escape each game with victory. In games where the Buckeyes have failed to play up to their ability, as was certainly the case against Purdue, they have seemingly willed victories away from their opponents when the game is on the line. On Saturday, however, the Buckeyes will be facing a team that has shown even greater resiliency. The Buckeyes are traveling to University Park, Pa. this weekend to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions, a team that has overcome an 0-2 start to win five consecutive games. The Penn State football program was rocked within the past 12 months by the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal that cost legendary head coach Joe Paterno his job, and later had to overcome the death of Paterno and NCAA sanctions levied against the program as a result of the Sandusky scandal, all the while adjusting to a new head coach of their own in Bill O’Brien. In the first two weeks of the season, the effects of this tumult seemed to have their effect on the Nittany Lions, who suffered surprising losses to Ohio and Virginia. Since then, however, Penn State has rolled off five consecutive wins, and comes into Saturday’s matchup as a serious threat to give the Buckeyes their first loss of the season. As both teams are ineligible for postseason play, some would say they have nothing to play for, but don’t tell that to the Buckeyes or Nittany Lions. After overcoming major adversity leading into their 2012 seasons, both of these teams have taken on new identities under their new coaches, and are making their regular seasons count. Meyer’s Buckeyes are composed largely of the same personnel from the 2011 team that went 6-7, and he has reignited the winning tradition that OSU football is known for. What O’Brien has done at Penn State this season, however, is remarkable. Filling the shoes of Paterno after his 46-year career coaching PSU, and following what is arguably the worst scandal in college football history, O’Brien did not take an easy job. It will continue to be a challenge, as the Nittany Lions are in just their first year of four years of NCAA sanctioning including a postseason ban and scholarship reductions. But by bringing his no-nonsense attitude, installing an up-tempo offense and redefining the image of Penn State football, O’Brien has the Nittany Lions headed back in the right direction. On Saturday, the Nittany Lions have a chance for their first post-scandal marquee victory if they can upset the Buckeyes. Given the way PSU has rallied together and won their past five games, the Buckeyes are going to need to be on top of their game to stop that from happening. Playing an ambitious team in Beaver Stadium, the nation’s second-largest stadium, a will to win won’t be enough to remain undefeated. read more

Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the world if

Genoa aims for a victory today

first_imgThe team’s manager Davide Ballardini says that the match against Sassuolo will be exceptional and he’s trying to overcome any obstacle to get a winGenoa started their season with a good 2-1 victory against Empoli last season. And manager Davide Ballardini wants to continue on the winning patch when his team plays against Sassuolo today. But Sassuolo has not been defeated in two matches played so far in the 2018-2019 Italian Lega Serie A season.Cristiano Ronaldo, JuventusSerie A Betting: Match-day 3 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Considering there is a number of perfect starts so early in the Serie A season, as well as a few surprisingly not-so perfect ones….“It is not easy to play against teams that have a smart trequartista in the side, like Empoli or Sassuolo,” he told Football Italia.“You need to stay tight and take it in turns to close him down, possibly with a central midfielder dropping deep. It’s important to play as a team, focused on both attacking and defending together.”“The win against Empoli was satisfying and we feel the fans have confidence in us, but it’s just the beginning. Kouame and Piatek are extraordinarily interesting, while Gianluca Lapadula never holds back and gives such a big contribution to the team,” he added.“It is a strong club that maintained the team’s identity with players who have been there for many years. That makes them a pleasing and rare exception in Italian football.”last_img read more
